Why Vultures Vomit on Predators? Shocking Defense Secret

0

Vultures have been living on the Earth for a long time. We know this beautiful bird, and one of the important behaviors of vultures is to watch closely how quickly they can react when any predator suddenly attacks them. They have a huge body, and we know their wingspan is around 5.5 feet. Because of their body size, it becomes difficult for them to make a quick reflex and fly immediately. During this time, if they do not do anything to protect themselves from predators, predators like tigers or wolves can easily catch them.

Vultures use partially digested food on predators as a defense. This partially digested food contains very high acidity. The acid found in the stomach of vultures is about 100 times stronger than the acid found in the human stomach.

We are talking about the Turkey vulture, and the main diet of this vulture is the dead bodies of animals. To digest such food, they have highly acidic enzymes inside their stomach, and the acidity level can be compared with the acid found in batteries.

Whenever vultures feel that they are being attacked by any predator, they quickly vomit the partially digested food on the predator. This stings the predator’s eyes and skin because it is highly acidic in nature. This gives the vulture time to fly away, and it also makes the vulture a little lighter due to weight reduction. During this time, the vulture can escape from predators.

This behavior is shown by vultures, especially the Turkey vulture, whenever they sense any kind of threat or are being attacked by predators. Sometimes they also use their feces and urine on their legs to keep their legs free from bacteria and harmful insects. Because of their highly acidic digestive system, their digestive juices, feces, and urine are also acidic in nature, which work as disinfectants or antibiotics and give protection from bacteria on their legs.

One more thing we notice and wonder to know is that bald vultures have bald heads. The reason behind their baldness is that when they feed on carcasses, they generally move their heads deep inside the bodies of dead animals. To prevent blood and other substances from sticking to their heads, they do not have feathers on their heads.

We hope you enjoyed these interesting facts about the world and vultures. Vultures are one of the most amazing creatures on Earth and have been living for a very long time. They survive because they feed on dead bodies. They never hunt living beings; most of the time, they feed on animals that are already dead, and sometimes the carcasses can be many days old.

I have completed my Master's degree in Zoology and I like exploring new information about animals. Apart from human there are a lot of living beings so I try to introduce something informative about living beings (animals).
