Man Fights Crocodile to Save His Goat in Odisha — Loses Arm

A shocking incident occurred in Odisha, India, where a man named Ranjit lost his arm while trying to protect his goat from a crocodile attack. According to news published by Odisha TV, Ranjit was watching his goat graze near a waterbody when a crocodile suddenly attacked the animal in search of food. Seeing his goat being dragged away, Ranjit bravely decided to fight the crocodile to save it. However, during the struggle, the crocodile severely injured him, resulting in the loss of his arm.

This incident took place in Jhampuli village, under the Kishorenagar police limits of Angul district. Ranjit was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His condition remains critical, and so far, no official statement has been released by the police or local authorities.

The tragic event has raised serious concerns among villagers living near waterbodies, as such areas are becoming increasingly dangerous for both humans and domestic animals like goats and cows that graze nearby.

This is one of the rare cases where a person, without fear or hesitation, risked his own life to save his pet from a crocodile. Ranjit’s act of bravery is being praised, though it also serves as a reminder of the dangers of confronting wild predators like crocodiles, whose bite force is among the strongest in the animal kingdom.

A few days earlier, a similar incident was reported in which a woman was dragged into a river by a crocodile in front of her 13-year-old daughter while she was washing clothes. These repeated attacks highlight the growing risk of human-crocodile conflict in the region.

Authorities are being urged to take strict safety measures and, if possible, relocate crocodiles from human-inhabited areas to safer zones — ensuring the protection of both people and wildlife without harming the crocodiles.
