The US is working on a project to reduce disease caused by mosquitoes therefore they planned to release millions of Genetically Modified mosquitoes in Florida and California. Every year thousands of people are affected by Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and Yellow fever which is transmitted by mosquitoes. To reduce these diseases research team was working on a project.
Genetically altered mosquitoes are male mosquitoes and they don’t bite human according to the report and these mosquitoes will be released on different areas and researchers believe that when these genetically altered mosquitoes will mate to female mosquitoes the offspring will not survive. This way diseases caused by mosquitoes will be reduced. The main target of this project is to destroy the next generation of mosquitoes. If less number of mosquitoes will survive then less chances of Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow fever.
The Environmental Protection Agency has approved a plan to test the insects.
The biotech company Oxitec has developed this altered gene mosquito and this experiment is done in Aedea aegypti mosquito. This experiment is done in male mosquito and this new mosquito doesn’t bite according to the researchers. This new modified mosquito is codenamed OX5034. The target of this project is female offspring. Generally female mosquitoes transfer the disease in human so when native female mosquito will mate with this altered male then the offspring female will not survive till adulthood.
This is not the first project US is working on mosquitoes before this project in previous year 2021 Pilot project was done in which millions of mosquitoes were released.
On this Oxitec said that they are doing it to reduce the transmission of disease like Dengue and Chikungunya.
